Touring the city with Dr. Faust, the chronicler and historian at the magistrate of Hürth, who was showing them the memorial commemorating the deportation of Hürth`s Jews and resistance fighters "Der Schrei" we met on the "Berliner Platz".

Illusionary freedom

Between irrationality and rationality of behaviour we have patterns and modes of conduct, which are culturally condensed. Such as rules regulate languages, including the scripting languages. But the boundaries make up the scope and the nature of the freedom we enjoy. Nowadays many want to lure us into limitless "freedom", thereby trapping us within narrow prisons of the mind, soul and body. Freedom is an expression of true rights within a context of options but without defining its opposite both perish in social anarchy, where the strongest gains all rights. Not really more to say - you can think millions of angles and disgressions, all differentiated applications in real life. Some of them scary.

H2-Busse sind ab 2010 Realität in Hürth

Hürth und die Region Köln waren schon immer ein Innovationmotor im Rheinland. Am Freitag hat hier auf dem Hügel oberhalb von "meinem" Hermülheim in Knappsack die Zukunft bereits begonnen. Das "Abfallprodukt" nahegelegener Industrien soll nach der zweijährigen Testphase mit den städtischen Bussen auch der allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden. Dann werden bis zu 40.000 Fahrzeuge dort tanken können.

Hürth has always been among the first cities in the Rhineland, Germany to embrace progress. On Friday the first "gas"-station that will give out Hydrogen to hydrogene busses has opened. Starting from 2010 they will be an expression of what direction technology should head for. Since the H2 is a waste product of industries nearby the question of how the H2 is actually produced can be productively circumvented. After two years of testing it is intended to open this "gas"station to the general public thereby giving clean gasoline to up to 40.000 cars.

Von grauen Wolken

Eigentlich recht banal. Das Wetter ändert sich, so auch die Umstände, unter denen wir leben. Sei es wirtschaftlich oder politisch. Doch gibt es Viele, die einen bisher er- und gelebten Status Quo für einen statischen Zustand halten. Dem Sonnenschein folgt Regen, dem Hoch zweier Generationen nach dem Krieg folgt die Ernüchterung, vielleicht über die Verhältnisse des Vernünftigen gelebt zu haben. Dabei ist weder die Welt, noch unsere (deutsche und europäiche) Gesellschaft ein Selbstbedienungsladen. Und was tut ein Unbelehrbarer? Er jammert, zetert und zeigt mit dem Finger. Ich hoffe da auf mehr Wetterresistenz und Bescheidenheit - bei uns allen.

World citizen and human patriot

Recently we discussed the old theme why mankind seems to slide into that vicious circle of rise and fall in society and nation building throughout his long history and how we can prevent it. Some said we simply always need an enemy, some said it is our nature...hmmm. Maybe a first step towards changing it are some old-fashioned virtues in their modern cloths: Let us all be world citizen and human patriots, how about it?

Some Villagers` judgement

Villagers have something to admire, but when they try to comment on things that they pretend to understand, it simply must go wrong. Judging art is difficult, yes. But calling a piece of art "Schrott" (Junk)- as some of the (non-cosmopolitan) villagers have done - goes to far. This piece of art (IMHO) is currently exhibited in "my" part of the city of Hürth, within a roundabout. I like it very much. What do you think?

The art of software

In a social network "closeby" in the web a lengthy discussion is waging as whether the developer will be replaced because of the ability of any user to construct simple applications. The question is: "What is the future for software developers if basic users can create applications without any effort? (Discussion in Linkedin-Group)". Many highly sophisticated and intelligent comments are made and speak for themselves.

But if we look back into the history of philosophical thinking concerning the creation of art, or even the reality of creating pieces of art, music ...or software, we find that some thoughts were actually made on that issue. They concern the "ingenuity" and the "originality" of a human design, maybe sometimes accentuated by reflecting on nature`s beauty and variety. There is a trait, a distinct difference that seperates a Picasso from one of his followers, from an amateur painter even more. Is it only the perfection? What perfection? Maybe it is the strength and consequent "elaboration" of possible but seldomly realized options that are mirrored through the individual personality of its creator? Arete and techne (as discussed in Plato's dialogue "Protagoras" )fuse. So there is always a future for software developers. The European Software Conference acknowleges this by giving the Epsilon Award to a "combination of Excellency, craftsmanship and visionary ability" which are "characteristics of an outstanding programmer and a piece of true software art."

MicroISVs: Not fearing slowdown

Small and medium sized software companies have an advantage that counts a lot nowadays: Their ability to adapt to difficult times and circumstances is much stronger, their willingsness to innovate a natural part of their fitness for survival. In these days billions of Euros and Dollars are invested to stabilize banks and companies that simply messed it up. We "small" software developers stand aside and watch their slowdown and dispair. Interestingly enough hardly anyone wonders why MicroISVs can cope without a check from the government. Just ask us at the European Software Conference 2009!

Spitzeltraditionen und Computer

Ach ja, "einige" haben in Deutschland (und auch anderswo) das Spitzeln noch nicht verlernt. Und immer dienen als Quelle der Begehrlichkeit die Computer ihrer Mitarbeiter. Gut, wenn wir Entwickler dafür sorgen, dass Spammüll und Spyware keine Chance mehr haben, doch was tut man gegen Bespitzelungen aus der Konzernspitze? Eigentlich eine einfache Sache für Admins der Netzwerke, oder? Bei jeder "Suchanfrage" al la Herrn M. von der B. gibt es direkt eine Kopie an den Datenschutzbeauftragten? Bespitzelt die Bespitzler, oder wie? Hmmmm.

You know this gentleman called Barack? He has really understood how to wrap up the world from its feet. Rebuilding is a hard job. Destruction was so "easy" and running away from the bothering truths had been a tradition. You certainly got many enemies, Barack but the village of Cosmopolia would like to welcome you as our citizen.

Die Ästhetik des Absoluten

Bei einem Webspaziergang blieb ich länger auf einer Webseite mit musikalischer Raffinesse stehen. Hier wird auf eine packende und direkte Art mittelalterliche und barocke Musik modernisiert, auf eine gelungene Art und Weise. Letzlich führt dieser Umgang mit einem für amerikanische Verhältnisse "fremden" Musikmaterial zu einer Adaption in eine Sackgasse. Aus dem europäischen (historischen) Kontext herausgenommen, bleibt das chorale Element, die Glaubensdramatik, die hinter dieser Musik bei der Komposition stand, nur noch als dramatische Kulisse stehen. Die Musik rührt an uns, weckt einen metaphysischen Impuls, doch wird dieser mangels der Tradition notwendigerweise abflachen und versanden. Vielleicht sogar fehlgeleitet werden. Die amerikanische Kultur zeigt sich hier von ihrer besten (spontanen und infantilen) und ihrer schlechtesten Seite(weil sie Tradition und Geschichte als Versatzstücke momentaner Empfindsamkeit verwendet). Logischerweise führen alle Pfade des Wunderns und des Fragens zum Zauberland Hollywood, zur 1001-Jukebox von Gewalt und Trivialität. Wenn man dann noch sieht, wo die Musik als Hintergrundston eingesetzt wird, kann es einem Europäer nur gruseln...andererseits wäre wohl der typische Europäer nie auf eine solche kompositorische Zusammenstellung gekommen, hätte er selten den Stilbruch an dieser (Musik-)tradition provoziert, der der Kunst immer wieder (manchmal zu Recht) angelastet wird. Mein kleines Fazit dieser insgesamt ratlosen deutsch-amerikanischen Betrachtung ist für mich ein Lebensfaden, eine Realität: Europa und Amerika (hier USA) sind untrennbar verbunden. Offensichtlich befindet sich die USA aber mal wieder in einer Lern- und Adaptionsphase nach europäischen Vorbildern. Vielleicht - jetzt als Europäer sprechend - kann da die usamerkanische "Gesellschaft" von Europa gemeinschaftliches Verhalten lernen; eine Poesie der Nähe, die zum Zurückdrängen des Gewalt-Kultus, wie er in zuvielen Filmen zelebriert wird, beiträgt...?

Crisis and stability

The micro-structures everywhere are currently surviving the fall of several dinos whatever name and previous prestige they had. Something like the rise of homo sapiens is happening on the evolutionary stage of economics. Intelligence and individuality prevails. The grassroot concept will certainly be able to heal big companies and entities. Together with this insight we experience something called honesty, may I say modesty? Welcome to the real world, good guys!

Dörfler und andere Weltbürger

Ein neues Jahr hat wieder begonnen. Dazu möchte ich allen Weblog-Lesern alles Gute wünschen. So ein Neuanfang hat etwas reizvolles. Endlich mal etwas fertigstellen, was bisher noch nicht gelang, vielleicht eine Freundschaft begründen, die sich bisher nur andeutete, oder an sich herumfeilen, um eine Besserung einer Charakterschwäche zu ermöglichen?

Klar, das sind Standardwünsche und -formulierungen, die Hoffnung ausdrücken. Sie zeigen aber auch die Parallelität des Handelns auf. Der "Dörfler" und der "Weltbürger" bewegen sich auf Bahnen, die nebeneinander verlaufen. In der Tat ist das die wirkliche Hoffnung: Dass mehr Menschen sich ihres kosmopolitischen Dorfcharakters oder umgekehrt bewußt werden. Keiner (auch keine große Firma) sollte fortlaufen können vor seinen Fehlern. Einigen Zeitgenossen, die unsere (gesellschaftliche) Ermüdung für naturgegeben halten, sollten sich ins Buch schreiben lassen, dass das Phänomen des organisierten Vergessens nachläßt. Ein neues Jahr kann so, wenn der einzelne kosmopolitische Dörfler sich mehr erinnert (wir alle !) wirkliche Veränderungen in der Zukunft mit sich bringen, oder?

Global responsibilies

When you borrow the lawn mower from your neighbour because yours is broken he can be sure that he will get it back. If it is broken you will get it repaired, right? And if you buy it from him, he will care to give it to you in perfect shape, right? The SMEs of our software industry think and work the same way. We produce products that inherit and incorporate pride and a sense of responsibility towards the customer, who on his side will not demand the impossible adaption and alteration of the application. If that works, our world is functioning and people get along.

But when whole industries and individual persons play with the other individuals`trust - then there is a lack of global responsibility. Who blames them for that, who eventually punishes them? Hopefully the institutions and mechanisms that should do it. If your software does not hold what it promises then the individual will be "punished" on a global scale rather quickly. And there are no government exits for him. Probably the difference between real global players and those that pretend?
